 What's New in Piedmont

H--Candy Corn. I am sure it’s available the rest of the year but for me its point of existence is the 31 days of October. There is a technique to eating CC. One nibbles each layer individually. It doesn’t matter that each layer tastes the same; it’s the ritual that counts. Disturbing trend: “gourmet” candy corn in candy apple, blueberry and chocolate flavors. NO, this is an unacceptable change. I want my candy corn to taste like candy corn, i.e. nothing but pure sugar.
A--Hot Apple Cider: The only time I seem to drink this concoction is during the month of Halloween (and you just thought it was a one day event-hah!) I have drunk it with added adult beverages and honestly, I think I just prefer it straight up.
L--The concept of free candy is possibly the best thing ever invented. I am not sure of the history of how this came to be but what a lovely idea. My son also thought it was a lovely idea when he was 7, so much so he continued to scam the neighborhood thru the month of November until the neighbor across the hall finally ratted him out. He is his mothers’ child.
L--Halloween is all about fun. I like the old fashioned notion of Halloween. I like cake walks and bobbing for apples and doing the Hokey Pokey and board games. I am not a big proponent of the horror aspect of one of my favorite holidays. I survived growing up, that was scary enough. I have yet to actually watch “The Shining” all the way thru even though I usually try every Fall. I always seem to  bail out at the twins/red room scene.
O--I like witches and fairies, the not so spooky spooks. I like Alice Hoffmans’ “Practical Magic” witches. Bette Midler makes a good witch. I actually played the Wicked Witch of the West in an elementary school rendition of “The Wizard of Oz”. I must say it was the high point of my theatrical career.
W--Halloween is the one time of year I treat myself to goodies from the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. It is a purveyor of gothic, Renaissance and Medieval themed potions.  A new scent called “Boo” is now available: eerie billows of spun sugar, fluffy white cotton and cream.
E--October 31 enables me to be all I can be. Halloween lets us embrace our most inner self. It allows us to pretend and embrace those things we cannot be in our daily life.
E-- Halloween allows me options: I am torn this year on my costume options: Cowgirl or Roller Derby Queen. Maybe a roller skating barrel racer?
N--Happy Halloween to all! Be safe. Have Fun—the two are not diametrically opposed!
