Hi All!  I thought I'd post an email we received from the Windmill Park Homeowners Association about a special upcoming event in Piedmont!  Read on...

Dear Neighbors:

Below is a copied email that I received regarding Piedmont hosting the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall.  This is very exciting news for Piedmont .  I have never seen the Memorial in Washington D.C. , but I have seen this.  Although it is a 3/5 scale of the Memorial in Washington D.C. , it is a very powerful and moving memorial.  It is 6’ at the center and covers 30’ from end to end.  Seeing all of those tiny printed names that fought so honorable and proudly, takes your breath away.  May all of our fallen soldiers rest in dignity and peace.

Please forward this email to your family and friends.  Piedmont needs many volunteers to accomplish this historic event.  Please try to attend the meeting on Thursday, January 15th at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

See you there,
Amy Lawter

To the community of Piedmont & all email contacts:

The community of Piedmont will have the honor of hosting the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall the weekend of July 4th, 2009.  This “wall” is a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington , D.C. , and is dedicated to all Americans who served in Vietnam and honors all veterans of the United States military forces.

The memorial will be viewable from Friday, July 3rd to Sunday, July 5th, 24 hours per day.  As you may imagine, many volunteers will be needed to accomplish this event with the deserving respect.

There will be a four committee system in place:

An Accounting Committee will execute a plan to solicit contributions and will handle and track all monetary and in-kind donations received, expenses, tax deductible receipts, and of course, thank you notes, et cetera.

A Ground Site Committee will responsible for installing and dismantling wall, preparing site, ensure a clean and safe venue, develop master traffic/parking plan, just to name a few…

Programs and Ceremonies Committee will coordinate main ceremonies and programs of the event, through veterans, military, civic and school activities and groups, arranging guest speakers, programs, assist visitors with location of names and rubbings, coordinating name reading program, arranging for the playing of “Taps”, 21-gun salute, raising and lowering of colors, and many other actual event functions.

The Publicity Committee is primarily responsible for attracting visitors to the venue and generating positive media coverage about the event, through press releases, soliciting billboards, banners and free ad space, fliers, posters...  In addition, recruit volunteers, handle public inquiries, and make sure Piedmont looks the best it can for the event.

There will be a community meeting held at 6:30pm, January 15, 2009, at City Hall, to present committee chairs/co-chairs, organize volunteers into committees, and set committee responsibilities.

The vision of hosting the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall in our community is to treat the event with the utmost reverence and honor while uniting our community with our best foot forward.  This will be something that we will never forget. Invite everyone you know and spread the exciting news!

Co-Chair of Wall Oversight Committee
